Three Superpowers You Need to Get You Writing

Since I was a child, I had a wild, unexplained yearning to create stories with imaginary people and animals. In fact, when I wrote a story about a good wolf (think I was seven or eight years old), I felt like I had a superpower. I'd just created a story straight from my imagination! I'll never forget that feeling of awesomeness that came with writing. While I knew that I wanted to be a writer, I waited too long to take action. I didn’t take my writer self seriously (in the sense of making a STRATEGY or setting GOALS with deadlines), didn’t set myself up to be an author, didn’t make any forward progress, because I was overly focused on the mystical aspects of writing, storycrafting. If we weren’t born with the gift of storycrafting, then we have accidentally fallen in love with the gig somewhere along the way. Writers are so rip-roaring drunk on words that we often can’t think practically, so it’s little wonder that we generally proceed on our course without a strategy. That doesn’t mean we should blindly crash through the forests on our journeys. We may be drunk on words, but we don’t have to be stumbling fools. There’s a lot of mumbo-jumbo out there telling writers what they should do if they want to become successful. While I believe there is a strategy every writer has to follow, it is a strategy unique to you. And the ONLY way to discover your unique strategy is to spend time and energy connecting to your writer self.I do have a hack, however, that I’d like to share with you. If you’re eager to get writing and you don’t want to delay the story that’s tugging at your soul strings, then summon three superpowers. What are the three superpowers that will get every writer writing? Read this blog post by Kate Johnston | Author & Story Coach to learn the three things you need to get you started on your writing journey today. We all have them. It’s just a matter of making the right calls. These three superpowers will for sure help you move forward on your journey, help you become a better and happier writer, and will rumble your creative spirit.SUPERPOWER #1 -- BELIEFEveryone has a story inside themselves. It could come from life experience, daydreaming, or intentional storycrafting.Don’t let your fear or impulse to compare yourself to others stop you from following that story path in front of you.You are possible. Your writer self is possible. But only you can bring it out to the world and make it dance. Believing in yourself, in your dream, that you can learn and grow, that is all you need to get started. This doesn’t mean that self-doubt or anxiety has no place in your writing journey. If those are some of your core feelings, then they need to be addressed. But they also need to be hooked onto a tight rein. One of the best ways to get a handle on those take-down emotions is to journal about them. Explore them through your written thoughts and plans.I once quit writing because I didn’t believe in myself. I let my low self-esteem and doubtful friends/family get the best of me. Once I saw how empty my life was, that I actually became physically ill from not writing, then I restructured my inner landscape. Only I could do that for myself, and it took a long time, but honoring my creative self was that important to me. I had to connect with my need to tell a story that actually moved me forward in a positive and productive way.Rather than worrying about how others do it, tap into how YOU need to honor your creativity so that you can write with heart. Focus on connecting to the things, people, concepts, and ideas that INSPIRE you to write. Make those elements a part of your everyday life.SUPERPOWER #2 -- PURPOSEThere is a difference between a GOAL and PURPOSE. A goal will help you achieve something. Purpose will help you BE someone. Are you confusing goal and purpose? To figure out your purpose, you need to ask yourself why you want to be creative. A goal will help you create opportunity. Purpose will help you know what to do with that opportunity.A creative can’t be creative without knowing what inspires their creativity. Understanding why you’re a writer will help you learn how to connect to your creativity. You’ll be able to recognize what sparks in the world inspire you to be creative. You will be more intentional about finding those sparks every day because you’ll understand why they matter to you.If you’re lacking purpose then you are lacking a system to develop your creative self. One of my favorite methods to figure out if you know your purpose is to ask yourself “What will I do once I reach my purpose?” If you don’t have a plan above and beyond that dreamy desire, then you haven’t discovered your purpose, you have only set a goal (and a weak one, at that). If your landscape broadens beyond your desired purpose, then you have chosen to follow a path of creative and bountiful living.SUPERPOWER #3 -- DETERMINATIONFitting creativity into a hectic, chock-full life can be very difficult! Time management, project marketability, and writing process are just a few playing fields to navigate. Staying true to your purpose requires determination that will ultimately help you with the more practical aspects of managing your time, writing a book that people want to read, and finding your best writing process.Maybe you’re an exploring writer, just starting out. Or you’re an intentional writer who has a clear vision. Or you’re somewhere in the middle of the two extremes. Wherever you are on your writing journey, determination will help you make the choices that are right for YOU. Determination will also help you keep your creative spirit healthy and nurtured, ensuring that you continue to do what is best for your creativity.Make a daily plan of when you’re going to connect to your creativity. Where will you go to find those sparks to inspire you? Creativity is easy to put off for more pressing matters, but our determination to keep it flowing will actually lead to more creativity!"Sometimes, writers get so rip-roaring drunk on words that we proceed on our journey with no strategy for how to handle our writer self. Go ahead, be drunk on words. But don't be a stumbling fool. Know thy writer self."These three superpowers will get you cranking on your writing journey. But they won’t fulfill every need you might have along the way. That’s why it’s still important you connect with your creative self and learn what sparks in the world inspire you.
